 Taking Mozy to New Heights
Some people save their vacation time for trips to the beach, Disneyland, or a Caribbean cruise. Others, like Mozy COO Vance Checketts, save it for a 3-week stint in sub-zero weather climbing Mount McKinley. At 20,320 feet, it's the highest peak in North America and exceeds the vertical rise of Mt. Everest by 6,000 feet.
May 18, Vance began his ascent. Only 43 percent of the 1,191 climbers who will attempt the long climb in 2009 will actually summit, and several will die trying. He battled low levels of oxygen, -30°F weather, fierce winds, the departure of 4 climbers from his group, and a storm that kept him and others at camp mid-climb for seven days. Yet Vance and two guides reached the summit June 3 and proudly waved the Mozy flag.
His success can be attributed to a few things: training and physical fitness, mental/emotional fortitude, and experienced guides. Or maybe it was just his everyday chant: "Breathe. Don't slip. Breathe. Watch the rope. Breathe. Take a step. Stay warm. Don't die."
Congrats on your big accomplishment, Vance. The future for Mozy and Decho is very bright. We're proud to have such a fearless leader for the journey ahead.
